About the Book

Soil science is the study of soil as a natural resource on the surface of the Earth including soil formation, classification and mapping; physical, chemical, biological, and fertility properties of soils; and these properties in relation to the use and management of soils. Soil biology is the study of microbial and faunal activity and ecology in soil. Soil life, soil biota and soil fauna are collective terms that encompasses all organisms that spend a significant portion of their life cycle within a soil profile, or at the soil-litter interface. Soils are rich ecosystems, composed of both living and non-living matter with a multitude of interaction between them. Soils play an important role in all of our natural ecological cycles. They also provide benefits through their contribution in a number of additional processes, called ecosystem services. These services range from waste decomposition to acting as a water filtration system to degrading environmental contaminants. Soil biochemistry is one of the branches of soil science dealing with the formation and decomposition of soil organic matter, biochemical reactions of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, metals and xenobiotic in soils, and biochemistry of the plant-root rhizosphere. The book will suit to the needs of students, teachers, scholarsand general readers.

Fran Russell is a board certified clinical chemist and fellow of the National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry. Following receipt of his Ph.D. in Biochemistry, he pursued post-doctoral studies at the school of Medicine. He spent the early part of his career as Lecturer and later Senior Lecturer in the Department of Biochemistry. He has numerous clinical and basic science publications and serves on various scientific and editorial boards. He is actively engaged in the training of Pathology residents and fellows in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. He currently serves as Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer for Clinical Laboratory Partners. He has authored more than 200 scientific publications, including several books as author and as editor. He has served on the editorial boards of several journals. Danni Gilmore worked at the Interfaculty Institute of Biochemistry. He has developed and leads an intensive course on Soil Biology and Biochemistry, enzyme technology and legend binding. He is also working on the gentle immobilization of enzyme activities on synthetic surfaces, a method which has been favorably applied for the restoration of damaged documents. He is the author of over eighty scientific papers, holds eight international patents, and has received four thousand citations. His research on drug discovery and genomics has received high acclaim.
