About the Book
Organic chemistry is a discipline within chemistry that involves the scientific study of the structure, properties, composition, reactions, and preparation of carbon-based compounds, hydrocarbons, and their derivatives, these compounds may contain any number of other elements, including hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, the halogens as well as phosphorus, silicon and sulphur. Organic compounds are structurally diverse and the range of application of organic compounds is enormous. Organic Chemistry provides an easy access to the core information in the field and makes a comprehensive approach to disseminate information in a clear and systematic manner. The book is presented and organized in a way to discourage students from rote learning. It covers all the topics in Organic Chemistry which are normally included in the syllabi of Indian universities for undergraduate courses. Special emphasis has been given to the basic concepts viz. acids and bases, hybridization and resonance. Though, the study of Organic Chemistry may be complex, it is very important in everyday life. Although many books on the subject are available in the market, yet, there is a dearth. Hence this humble effort, will hopefully proveto be beneficial for all concerned readers.
Contents: 1. Structure and Reactivity, 2. Stereochemistry and Stereoisomerism, 3. Aromatic Substitution Reactions, 4. Mechanism of Some Name Reactions, 5. Spectra and Structure, 6. Isolation, Structure Elucidation and Synthesis of Alkaloids, 7. Carbohydrates.
Luke Bell received his Bachelor and his Ph.D. form Guyana. He is a Fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Science. He has received several awards, which include the National Institutes of Health Career Development Award. In addition to organic chemistry, he is also the author or coauthor of inorganic chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Advanced Organic Synthesis: Laboratory Manual, Organic Reaction Mechanism. His research interests concern the mechanism and catalysis of organic reactions, Medicinal Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, particularly those of biological significance.
Ash Copeland was a lecturer at Cleveland University, where he teaches Organic and General Chemistry. He received a Bachelor in Chemistry and a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Florida. He subsequently joined the faculty, where he has taught and conducted research in Organic and Bioinorganic Chemistry. He has authored many textbooks in addition to several dozen research papers. He is a dynamic and creative teacher and uses analogy to help students grasp difficult topics. Ash Copeland's unique informal voice and manner of presentation help students truly master key topics in this course. He is also the author of Organic Chemistry as a Second Language and General Chemistry asa Second Language, which have both been highly successful.
