About the Book
Sociology is the study of human social relationships and institutions. Unifying the study of these diverse subjects of study is sociology's purpose of understanding how human action and consciousness both shape and are shaped by surrounding cultural and social structures. A social system basically consists of two or more individuals interacting directly or indirectly in a bounded situation. There may be physical or territorial boundaries, but the fundamental sociological point of reference is that the individuals are oriented, in a whole sense, to a common focus or inter-related foci. This book has been written as a result of dissatisfaction with the attitude prevailing among sociologists that the scientific method will make sociology the fittest instrument for planning and controlling social relationships. Designed to meet the needs of all those related to the subject, this book will be invaluable to students as well as professionals

Orien Freeman is professor emeritus of Sociology. He is perhaps best known for his book The Social Construction of Reality. In this book, considered one of the most important works on the sociology of knowledge written in the twentieth century, the authors make a case for humanistic sociology that views human reality as socially constructed. They propose that sociological knowledge can best be achieved through a continuing conversation with history and philosophy. Orien Freeman was a professor emeritus of religion, sociology, and theology and director of the Institute for the Study of Economic Culture, which studies relationships between economic development and socio-cultural change.
